Purely from an engine revs point of view, one of the big advantages of the Mychron over the Alfano is that it shows lowest revs as well as peak. With the Honda engine this can actually be much more important than peak revs. Optimising your engine revs for maximum punch out of several low speed corners will make far more difference to your lap times than gearing for one short maximum revs point on the track. You will find that a dyno print out for your engines or even just a Generic GX160 power and torque curve, combined with just the basic Mychron 4 info will give you invaluable insight into how changes of gearing effect your lap times and more importantly where on the track.
And that's the second point, why do many if not all track day organisors ban overt lap timing? Simply because it encourages you to push harder and get nearer the limit each time out to find little bits of time. Not good for track day insurance rates but essential for the aspiring racers.
