If you could reliably soften the tyre by a given amount, I can see it being a money saver if one used it only to use up 'old' tyres for another day's testing.

The danger is that someone would use it to gain an advantage during racing and I can imagine some interesting parc ferme discussions about how the sniffer was picking up residue on the rim from legally softened practice tyres.

The practice of restricting tyre sets for the race day (Clay for example insist on one set of slicks all day) would mean that even illegally softened tyres would only be good for the first heat, with any reapplication of softener being sniffed out.
