I heard at the time that one was illegal (don't know what was included / used) but wasn't dsq'd because of the bad press it would have given the series.

In fact the exact opposite would have happened. If they / he had been seen to be pro-active with cheats and acted fast rather than shying away, it would have show to the karting world that the subaru class was the way forward.

It failed because of a weak promoter. A common theme in karting / motorsport.
