I don't quite understand.

In summary, sprocket in-board use setting 1 (soft/smooth). Spin this through 180 degrees with sprocket now outboard this becomes setting 4 (harsh and bang like mad).

Sprocket in board setting 4 and again it will bang until it engages. Spin this around 180degrees with sprocket now outboard and this becomes setting 1 (smooth). In this orient aging use this on the right and engine.
