Probably one of the following:

They get smashed when a numpty behind you does a kamikaze move trying to make up 10 places on the first corner of a race

They have bead retainers which serve no purpose when running on tyres carved out of granite at 25 psi

Show them a steep sided kerb and the outer edge of the rim will disintegrate
