Unless you are still running the top tank there should be no issue in simply leaving the fuel valve open. In any event you need it fully open in use.

As for damage that is a huge unknown until you take the head off for a look. You might be lucky and get away with it but not sure I would want to take a risk with a race motor (as against something that sits at 2.5k revs all day on a water pump!).
