Back in the days of the Channel Challenge we used 100cc aircooled motors and two or more drivers.

The Channel Challenge at Clay was 6 hours, the winning team put in around 550 laps, averaging about 36 to 37 seconds, allowing for refuelling, driver changes and incidents.

The Challenge died because there were few teams willing to pay for the rebuilds (most teams used up at least two engines) or the pitcrews. One team could change an engine in 90 seconds with five engines complete with exhausts, carbs and cables ready on the table. With few teams, renting the tracks and hence entry fees became expensive.

But a six hour event, effectively 8 45 minute flat out sessions was Ironman territory for the two driver teams, especially as this was before rib protectors were standard kit.
