From what I recall in Rotax, by mid point on the pits bend we were pretty much in single file. You then had drivers diving down the inside before the left hairpin, trying to outgrunt their opponent before the right-hander onto the back straight. The times when karts went down the esses two abreast normally involved an 'off' because of the increased speed so there was more to lose.
As you are experiencing now in Rotax, the speed through the esses is significantly faster which may be a reason for the different approach.
My first race in prokarts last April was an eye opener due to the driving tactics of a particular opponents who just pushed me off the circuit in a couple of the braking zones. I had never experienced this before in owner driver meetings. This driver stopped attending mid last year and driving quality has been much improved because of it. I think many contributors to this thread are trying to build upon that.
If we ALL agree that the first 1/2 lap is 'full contact', I can adjust my driving style to ensure I don't go down the field - my plastics were covered in tyre marks when I bought the kart so I have nothing to lose. I'm just wary that a lot of drivers in the series are more concientious than that and would prefer other to improve their standards during the 'red mist' phase.
