The tab has been there for quite a while. Most just leave it as it is, however, you can trim it off with a Dremell and/or replace it with the brass head air-screw.

I haven't seen any different manifold to date. I would suggest that the vast majority of pulse pumps vacuums are still taken from the top of the crankcase.
