I always thought the inboard clutch was one with the clutch sproket inside (closer to the engine) usually on the right hand engine and an outboard clutch was the exact opposite so the sproket as furthest away from the engine. The outboard engine would go (L -R) sproket, clutch, engine where as the inboard would be clutch, sproket, engine.

On my LRG prokart it has to be this way so that chain doesn't foul the seat or the seat bars.

Hope that helps, more than happy to be informed I'm wrong as I'm far more experienced in 2 strokes!
