TIG is by far the best method. As with most materials, heat is the number one enemy of steel. Fortunately TIG welding creates a narrow heat affected zone to minimize weak joints or cracking that can result from excessive heat.
The problem with MIG is that it is so fast that the weld gets cooled too quickly by the surrounding cold metal and will induce much greater heat distortion.
