Matt....
Concentrate more on getting MANY practice laps in FIRST before you think about RACING!
It's going to come as a shock to you how QUICK the racers really ARE! Just unerstand that, unless you really ARE the 'New Ayrton', you are going to be plain SLOW for a start! Don't worry about it but just be CERTAIN that practice and thought WILL make you quicker and that all the rest of us started in exactly the same place as you!
You also need to accept that, to begin with, it's YOU that's slow and NOT the kart! Once you start to get the hang of it, we can explain ROUGHLY the order of the things you should change to give you the BEST improvement in the lap times for the CHEAPEST investment. (to begin with, after the errors in your driving..... it'll be tyres and tyre pressures!)
Start by knowing your LINES through the corners; secondly, fully understand that you have paid to drive on the WHOLE track, not just the bit down the middle (like 99% of novices do!)! If you can AVOID hitting the kerbs on exit, you are going WAY TOO SLOWLY! Take in the concept that you are trying to make the radius of EVERY corner as LARGE as possible. Finally, understand the logic that every time you MOVE the steering wheel, the kart SLOWS DOWN. The fastest way to travel is with the steering pointing STRAIGHT AHEAD.... that's make more sense later!
Ohh...... and sit UPRIGHT in your seat; don't LEAN OVER in corners: you are NOT driving a moped! We all LAUGH at 'leaners'!
*********
Maintenance is common sense! The bits that move wear out faster than the bits that are stationary! Lubricate the chain RELIGIOUSLY, every time you RETURN to the pits! Do that WITHOUT FAIL! Thye best mothod of cheacking that everything is OK on you kart is to CLEAN it with a rag, going over every inch of the kart, lovingly. That'll make you INSPECT every inch of the kart and that's when you'll see any problems!
That's enough fopr a starter!
Oh..... and most importantly.... remember it's about having FUN!
