I can actually follow this train of thought. Modern lubricants - especially synthetics - are so efficient, the rings/piston/bore never bed in properly and so do not make a good seal. This has been a problem for some car manufacturers' engines too where they end up burning oil faster than they do fuel because the engines never bed in properly.
I've got some Halfords mineral oil so I think I will do just that - thrash the knackers off it, change the oil regularly and then put a decent lube in!
