This issue was discussed at length in another thread some time ago.

If I remember rightly the conslusion was reached, that by the time you bought all the extras it was virtually no more expensive too buy a race prepared engine.

And with that you also get the mandatory (to be anywhere near competitive) torque hone and cam timing done
