I think you are wrong there John. More often than not a good scrutineer will spot something by observing a different noise or driving chartactoristic and will pull even a mid field runner. Alternatively alerting them to something strange will have the same affect.

The exhaust tone can be a give away but not always. Someone with more power than talent tends to be quick down a straight but slower in the technical sectioins so differing acceloration charactoristics will show (this could also be weight). If they can also drive with more power then they should be noticably quicker everywhere. Alternatively, they could simply be very quick drivers!!
