Whereabouts do you race? There's normally someone to help out if you don't get it going first time.
In terms of prepping the kart, all you need to do with prime the carb. Remove the air box and cover the flange with your hand. Rock the wheels back and forth and the fuel should be pulled through. Once you have a wet hand covered in fuel, stop and it should be ready to fire.
When it comes to starting, just make sure you get a bit of momentum going before you jump in and try and get to the pedal as soon as you can. If you can, do a few practice sessions first which should help you build confidence.
If you're struggling, try screwing in the idle screw a bit further to help with giving you a bit more throttle when starting.
Carb settings are around 2 1/4 on low and 5-10mins on the high.
I use one of these and they are excellent. Gets me started every time unless I can catch my foot on the plug cap...
