A brake rotor comprises brake disc and brake carrier.

The brake disc (at 16 mm) is cast and then stress relieved before machining. They are reasonably stable so it is unusual to have the disc show new stress patterns which would cause it to bend.

You can do it by overheating the disc, but the cast material is more likely to shatter than bend under impacts.

The carrier is usually made of aluminium and is notorious for going out of round, which may be no longer perpendicular to the axle, or have the bearing face ( where the brake disc bolts on ) go out of true.

You can make the disc go out of true by bolting it to an out of true carrier, so just rotating the whole rotor on the axle will not show whether it is the disc or carrier that is at fault. You need to unbolt the disc and put it on a flat reference surface, say the polished granite surface of your kitchen if you have one, they are usually accurate to a thou or two.

Then use a pointer to check whether the carrier is true, the bearing surface should be perpendicular to the axle, it should not 'wobble' (the 50mm hole the axle goes through should be concentric and not distorted) and the bearing surface should be regular, ie all the bolting surfaces should be in the same plane and there should be no burrs or bruises on the metal which could distort the disc when it is bolted up.

Bolting the disc should be carried out with the carrier tightened on the axle (the carrier may distort when the pinch bole is done up) and the disc bolts done up evenly (ie, tighten one gently then tighten the one on the opposite side)

Doing this may show that it isn't the disc, but the carrier or even simply that the brake disc has moved on the carrier, even if its only a few thou.

Or it may show which parts you need to replace.

As for running the pads with lots of movement on the pistons, fit shims to take up the slack as the pads wear, unless the manufacturer says shims should not be used (but there's a limit to the thickness of shims one can use)
