I have been running my lad for a year and still consider myself pretty inept mechanically. I've learnt how to assemble the kart, set it up somewhere near correctly for the conditions and troubleshoot most problems. It still takes me longer than a lot of other people to make a change and still need help with some aspects but I don't feel like I struggle quite as much as I did early on. The help that I have had from the regulars at my track has been invaluable - I'd have struggled so much more without them (so the recommendation to visit a track and start chatting to folk is a very good one). Other than the most basic maintenance, I leave the engine stuff my engine builder.

Depends on the class you choose (which should be determined by the classes that run at your preferred track, what your friends race and what your budget is). My TKM engine costs Ł250 every 10 hours and carb rebuild Ł20 which can vary between 2-4 hours, typically.

The detail depends on your class but... set it up the day before your next visit to the track. Dry it/clean it afterwards. Change tyres, rebuild/clean your carbs (the latter if you don't fancy the former), remove the fuel from the tank for storage, carry out basic engine checks if you can, replace broken bits.

If you are towing on top of a trailer, then you need a camping trailer, towbar, plywood board for the lid. Tools (exact ones depend on your class). Nuts, bolts, oil, fuel can/filters, foot pump/cheap air compressor. You'll find it much cheaper to get hold of an amount of the more perishable spares although you can get away without them, especially if your track has a shop and the shop stocks parts for your kart.

Getting up to speed will definitely consume a lot of your spare time (in terms of reading forum posts and tinkering) and you will quickly learn that everyone has an opinion and it really is about finding what works for you. The costs shouldn't be underestimated (there is a cost of running a kart for fun, the cost of racing is something else entirely) but it is something I would highly recommend.
