I was wondering if anyone has more information on the recently introduced IAME X30 SUPER SHIFTER 175cc?

The IAME website doesn’t give a lot of information regarding this unit, no indication of how much extra horsepower or torque it produces compared to its 42hp 125cc sibling.

Conceivably it may have been tuned for a lot of extra torque rather than lots of extra power.

175cc engine are becoming a little more popular. MOTORISEVEN also makes the 45hp L5 MA with a two speed gearbox

I’ve thought for a long time that Rotax should have taken the DD2 down the 175cc route. The DD2 only makes 4 more horsepower than the regular Max, but the outfit weighs 8-10kg extra so the power to weight ratio isn’t all that superior. Consequently if you put the DD2 and regular Max on a track that doesn’t have a really long straight and put them on the same tyres the difference in lap times is small.

In a lot of ways 175cc kart engines all round make a lot of sense. Typically they share the same 54.5mm stroke as the 125cc so can rev highly, but can make a lot more torque thanks to their 40% greater capacity. One doesn’t have to tune them very aggressively at all to get 30-35hp so they would have a much broader spread of power which is a great thing particularly in a non-gearbox kart. I recall in the good old days the 350cc (2 x 175 cc cylinders) Yamaha road race motorcycles were much nicer to ride than the peaky 250cc variants.
