I did a fair amount of research into this as my lad (13 this Feb) moved from IAME cadet to Minimax in Oct 13. We really wanted to go straight to X30 as it has a lot of positives from a mechanics and drivers point of view. However we watched and discussed with or teams Minimax older driver who was testing the X30 and decided to go for a Minimax interim. The X30 is a lot to handle straight from cadet for a 12yr old, also the main issue was the X30 min weight which is 145kg combined (mmax is 135) - my lad would have had to had 18kg of lead to start in x30 - which we didn't feel would be safe. A heavier lad with arms like Popeye would probably fair better - but we haven't regretted going to Minimax for a while.
