I raced in karting many years ago and into cars - and all the guys that made "it" of my era (McNish/Coulthard/Gavin/Franchitti) had a degree of family money behind them to get them at least a few rungs up the single seater ladder. So money in motorsport has always been there and always will. If you think someone like Coulthard or McNish didn't have the best of everything - and it was just their talent that got them noticed - well you need to have a lie down..

However, the guys that didn't "make it" have all, on the whole, gone onto be successful in other walks of life (literally everything from plumbers to investment bankers) and I would say much of that comes from the discipline karting/racing taught us. Its a wonderful sport, where I get to see my son grow up and he wants to spend time with me. I know it very unlikely that he will ever be paid to drive, but just remember somebody has to make it to F1 and dreams do come true. Ask Jan Magnussen - by far the standout talent of my generation - he got to McLaren F1 with literally nothing and has now got his son there also.

Look at the positives in the sport and what it gives and you will get a let more out of it.
