It should be dead easy to pull the engine over without the plug in as the motor has no compression, what can happen with the clutch is that parts/chunks of the friction pad can come away this 'could'? of been your problem. Good point Ian made regarding sucking up a stone through the airbox/carb then into the motor this is not uncommon and can be expensive to sort, we can go down that route later. Can you tell us if you run with a filter gauze over the airbox trumpet?
Your next step is to stop this carpark nonsense leave the throttle alone and let the motor run how it's supposed to. Get your lad down to Hooton and get him out sat/sun put him out with the bambinos or if it's quite they will put the cadets and bambinos together. Your boy..... He will spin...alot! They all do it's the law! Don't worry about it, don't worry about setup put him some old wets on even if it's dry your working on his confidence. Finally well done for sussing it out yourself and having a go, can't knock that, most people on here started out just like you. Any questions no matter how daft you may think they are always ask! Some good people on here that will always try and help.
