Thanks for all your posts and here's a quick update.

Once I worked out how to use the clutch puller (puller not pusher) it had ago at removing and replacing the clutch on my spare damaged engine. Came off with a bang so I think I've got it now.
Back to the ogiginal post.
Engine suddenly stopped working when driving around a car park and the starter pull locked up. Removed the spark plug and could see the piston moving slightly but then locking up.
The damaged clutch was mentioned as the problem so decided to remove the clutch cover with a view to replacing it with the clutch out of my spare engine.
Removed the clutch cover nut using the piston stop and removed the clutch cover. The clutch is intack and appears to be unmanaged. I replaced the clutch cover and nut and piston stop and tried pulling on the starter. The engine now turns over and appears to be free. Not sure how easy it's supposed to be to pull over with no plug in but it's not locking up.
Now I'm confused and not sure what the problem is or was but I don't think it's the clutch.
Any ideas chaps
