Two things to take into consideration:
tight spots on the chain, a bent axle can cause a chain break or throw a chain.
Bearing stress- there is a little play the the bearings but a bent axle can cause premature damage/wear- sometimes the dust covers pop off.
Axles despite being the stiffest component are designed to flex- I think you would get away with a 1mm movement
