Well as said above they do stop a rear bumper ripping them out but there is a 'con' to be aware of. I once (or twice) had a senior moment while rushing around prior to a race....and left a connector in one of the valves. Nothing happens until they go out on the track, then the tyre deflates during the first lap.
I did this at Kartmasters and received a spanner to the head for my trouble.
