Hi Robert

My advice would be to look on line at the results for the last season at the circuits closest to you to see how big the grids are in each class.

Then put them in order, biggest to smallest.

Go along to the circuits at a practice day and talk to the drivers and dads/mechanics in all the classes. You are more likely to get their time on a practice day.

Ask things like how often they fit new tyres, how often the front runners get their engines rebuilt. This will give you an idea of the running costs if you intend to go for the championship.

Find out if any class helps newcomers in their first few races. CPKC have a really good TKM group encouraging and supporting newcomers into TKM.

There are other considerations such as will you have support at each race from friends, how good are your mechanical skills, how good is your back, is a TAG engine a big consideration if you are on your own and have to bump start a direct drive engine. Also if you are on your own what trolley would you use as you have to get it on and off and there may not always be someone there to assist.

When considering costs, dont be put off by horror rebuild costs between rotax and other classes. If you dont have the tools and ability to do your own rebuilds, then you will have to pay a friend or an engine builder to do the work. If you look on the website here you can run a rotax for 25 - 50 hours on one rebuild, find out how often you have to fit a new piston and conrod in other classes and equate like for like. The charges might not be so different over a long period. Also there are other charges like the carbs, how often do you have to fit new diaphram kits, it does make you wonder when they sell them in packs of six.

Other considerations if you want to race MSA is the licence fees, helmet gloves etc which all have to be bought before you race.

Dont be tempted to look at the costs with rose tinted glasses, better to work out your budget properly than become another failed statistic because you didnt do your homework properly.

When you have done all this, make your decision and enjoy.

Good luck
