As a bit of a tinkerer, I am looking to see if there is a DIY method of setting the timing on a W60.

Whilst I am used to setting up dynamic timing on my MGB using a stroboscopic light, I am a bit lost as to setting up 2 stroke timing.
There are two marks (feint) on the stator plate, but no indication as to what they represent.I am guessing that one indicates TDC and the other is the standard timing setting as marked from the factory, with the 'left hand' mark being the standard setting as this would advance the timing by turning the plate clockwise.

What I would like to do is confirm TDC and the standard setting and then mark up intervals of 1-2 degrees either side to enable adjustments to be made at the track without the need for using a dial gauge etc at the trackside.

Is there any way of connecting a light or indicator to the 'black box' to indicate when the solid state points 'open' and so set a static timing ? Does the black box incorporate some degree of dynamic advance ?

Is it just a case of trial and error or best left to a professional engine builder and a dyno?

This stems from having had overheating problems earlier in the year which were not solvable by richening up the low speed jet on the carb / cooler plug / softening up the rear end of the chassis etc

Any help would be much appreciated.
