I graduated in 2009 which was pretty much the worst time to have auto engineering degree. Most of my class mates took bad jobs or waiting a year.
I'm not meaning to sound uppity but engineers are paid a lot more then £20k over here. I'm below the going rate over here for a grad ($65k unless your oil and gas which is $80k) but I'm still on a lot more then £20k. I'd be karting if I didn't get married (dammit). I do get asked to come back by recruiters but when they ask what my current salary is they are usually honest and say the jobs they are recruiting for are not at that level.
Engineering generally gets a lot more respect here, its up there with doctors and lawyers. In the UK they call toilet cleaners, sanitation engineers.
