We used to chop the ends off an old one and keep it ready to bung in. At the time it had the effect of releasing a bit of rear grip (or making the rear slightly looser if you prefer). So it was a Summer tweak and rarely used.
It would be inadvisable to go much below 1000mm from a standard 1030 because you would start to loose the keyway, hence the advantage of a new 1000mm axle.
