The TAG engine is oh so close to the DD version. Possible 0.1 to 0.15 second a lap slower. You would have to be a top driver to see this. It appears to be slightly slower out of slow corners. It could be the extra weight of the crankshaft or the 6 distinct magnetic pulses (as to 3 on DD) of the ignition system. What is clear is that when turning the crankshaft without piston or barrel there is far more resistance with TAG than DD. It's all about reducing friction and resistance.
We use(d) a TAG engine when 'messing' around with mates right up to the point when the magnets inside the starter came loose. They are bonded rather than riveted to the inside of the starter barrel. I have not had problems with the wiring and have always used Li-Po batteries that really spin the motor over quickly.
It is a great shame the TAG is not just a bit quicker than the DD. Reliability problem would have been well and truely overcome with everyone using them.
If you can get a well priced TAG get one but also get an external starter. Even if the electric starter fails it can still be operated as a clutched engine with external starter.
