If he's confident in the kart and doesn't mind driving one handed for a few seconds. He could try pinching the fuel line to the carb for a couple of corners before the start. The engine won't get as much fuel and shouldn't oil the plug as much. You can also cover the radiator while doing this to get a bit more heat into the engine. Tell him to feed the throttle in as stated before, rather than just the big footfull most of us give it off the start!
Could try it on a test day, but you can only go by the feel of the kart, unless a couple of the other drivers want to try it too.
