Dave is right - if you are careful you can control the costs. It's easy to get carried away and spend money on things that don't really help much when ultimately your driving makes the biggest difference in easykart. It is literally only when you are regularly running in the top 10 or maybe even top 5 that things like new tyres start to matter. A realistic shoe string budget for a full season inc practice is anything from about £2500 a year not including accomodation, car fuel or crash damage/repairs. That's just over £300 a race. I have broken it down below. Of course there is no obligation to do a full season if your budget doesn't stretch that far!
It's easy particularly to get carried away when getting yourself set up initially. What you ultimately need is:
Kart complete
Wet Rims
Race Suit (2nd hand are fine as long as they meet the MSA spec)
Helmet (Don't buy 2nd hand. A good helmet will last you years and will look after your head! Make sure it meets the 2010 MSA spec - otherwise you won't be allowed to race!)
Race boots and gloves
Arks Test (One off requirement for getting your race license)
Medical (One off requirement for getting a race license - although required yearly for over 40s)
Tools (a relatively basic set will get you started)
Transponder (Although this can be rented for £10 a race)
This might all seem a bit daunting to start with, but the best thing about easykart is that everyone is so friendly and happy to help. Most of us came into Easykart with little experience of running our own karts so we all remember what it was like and are happy to lend a hand or offer advice to new drivers! See you on the track!
Cost Breakdown:
£85 x 8 race entry
£8 x 8 Race fuel
£28 x 3 brake pad sets (how many you use depends on your driving style)
£7 x 5 sprockets (lots of chain lube and align them properly and they will last more than one race)
£18 x 4 chains (same applies as with sprockets)
£7 x 3 spark plugs
£136 x 4 Slick Tyres (Tyres are still very good in their second race - however new rubber does give an advantage in qualifying, although only the best
drivers seem
to be able to extract the extra time from them)
£161 x 1 Wet Tyres (depends on weather conditions of course!)
£10 x 2 carb rebuild kit
£10 x 8 Misc. consumable parts
Total £1761
However .. you also need to factor in the following over the year
£27 MSA Membership
£50 Easykart Membership
£350 Engine rebuild (Approx every 20hrs - this is enough for a full season of 8 races and 7 tests)
£0 - ??? Crash damage/repairs (This is the big one! I did my first season with £0 damage and repairs ... this season I have spend over £300 already. In theory one crash could cost you even more than that! - it's very hard to estimate and depends on how lucky / contact shy you are!)
£0-? Accomodation (Anything from £0 to camp to whatever you pay for a hotel!)
£? Car fuel (Totally depends on where you live and what car/van you drive)
Total £427 + Accom + transport + damage/repairs
The day before each race is an optional practice session that you might choose to do.
£35 x 7 Practice fees

£0 Tyres (if you use your old race ones - although they do start to drop off more significantly after 3-4 days running)
