It went just inboard of the inner threaded section between the conical washer and retaining nut.

I think that previous owner(s) will have rested starter on crank whilst waiting on grid - can't think of any other reasonable rationale for failure.

Looks to have gone half-way, stopped then the other half gave way at weekend, or should that be weak end?
