It used to be the rule that you had to run synthetic on race days and it was very easy for clubs to do a fuel check to enforce this.
I believe that used to remove some of the carbon build-up and so people then used castor for practice to put it back - depending on how close to the limit their squish was.
The change to just using castor came after the Tryton carbs were introduced as there were loads of problems the first year with carb failures. Part of the problem was thought to be switching between castor and synthetic and the decision was made to just use castor.
