I agree with both Alan & Simon when considering set up but probably fall a little more into Simons's camp.

The set up I would give my son would hopefully make him go faster on the stopwatch but he would not like the 'feel'. A fast lap time on practice day does not always equate to a fast race day. The kid's mindset is completely different. Based on this I would set the kart to be 'friendly' to drive which would in turn give him a higher level of confidence and when those race moments happened he would be able to drive through it. This strategy will not get you so many wins but you will always be in the mix....championships are not won in a single round, but can be lost.

In my early days of cadets I used to use an American book...I think the authors name was Smith...It's normally advertised on the karting magazine web site. I made a table from it that told me what to do when it rained was cold or had oversteer etc. (nothings perfect but it helped)
