I think the main benefit I would get from it would be seeing the lines taken on every lap and making sure he's being consistent. It would be a good way to see that he is braking consistently aswell.
I like the idea of saving the data/track map for his best practice lap and then when it isn't going so well it would help him/me see very clearly where the problem is, ie is it top speed, corner speed, braking, particular section of track.
I think the point about getting the kids used to interpreting data logging info when they are young is a very good point too.
Does anyone have any experience of the My Tach watch which seems to give the track mapping capability and works with the Race Studio analysis software. Very tempted to feel my way with this first as at £175 it is an affordable solution compared with around £500 for the Mychron GPS module?
