Hi all on this thread. It is really important to understand that all things in motorsport are relative. I know you could write a book on that statement alone but to try and give an accurate summary for the original post, here goes...
First thing to consider is the driver and the level that THEY would like to aspire. They really do need to develop a huge amount of skills/ability and in my experience (30yrs)these skills are best developed in the early years by the experience its self. The young persons attention is more focused on what they are doing... driving. The young person needs to develop and understand the technical aspect of driving so that they "knowledgeable". Drivers need not only technical skills they also need race skills, another world altogether. You can then add to this Set Up skills and this process at best would take 18 months (at this age & level). I guess what I am saying here is a good coach/tutor would be a better investment.
These elements in place and the young person will be getting extremely good results. Now with a background/foundation in place the driver is in a position to take advantage of full data technology.
Hope this helps and I know... "but what about..."
