The quote of Ł9k to buy engines is based on you buying one or two from each manufacturer. the idea that they then all become scrap at the end of the year also seems ridiculous as at worst the manufacturers amy bring outsome imporved parts - barrel etc so they could just be upgraded.
There was all the hype with Rotax that you must have the 09 barrel to have any chance but othres said a good, older engine would be just as good.
If you can hire an engine for Ł300 per meeting then that is not Ł4500. S1 is 7 rounds so that is Ł2100.
Most classes seem to have people willing to spend loads of cash to get to the front but there is always TKM and Easykart where you can do a national series on a more modest budget.
