the major cause for the faiures particularly round the engine area is due to vibration transferred by the engine. As formula blue and tkm engines do not have a balance shaft fitted. Im not saying by anycase that this is the only cause but the biggest amount of failures has been with tkm and blue engines. Something the italians who make the kart have never seen or run as most tag engines used now have balance shafts to reduce this. In previous years tkm chassis were mainly 32mm tubing which is a thicker tube so more weld penetration but even so failures were numerous. You only have to speak to my brother who became an expert in welding within months with the venoms whist he worked there. And everyone thought that not painting them was stylish it was common sense! The v4 chassis had brazed joints on the pod bars and seat supports to allow a softer less rigid weld which helped. Even still pod bar failure were frequnt. The vibration just moved somewhere else! These were not backstreet karts the venom was produced over the yrs by 2 of the leading uk kart builders in the country and the jkh a well known and respected chassis builder. I do not know the viper as my bro no longer works there nor i for jkh maybe pc has asked tonykart to sleeve the chassis to aid weld penetration it is something id like to know how he has combatted. I am aware that john sent chassis over for his meeting with them so he could show them and their welders the issue. It is not something that manufacturers have not seen before all european karts at some point have had problems in years gone by but it does not get solved overnight. Im sure they will alter processes of manufacturing and welding. There are items out there to aid with vibration damping ie engine mounts. And most large teams now run with emery cloth strips doubled up on the rails under engines to aid with paint damage and vibration damping. I have not discussed in detail with john the results of the meeting and intrepids proposals but will be doing so. Dont get me wrong i know some rotax chassis have failed too but they do not seem to suffer anywhere near as badly and the blue and tkm engines. Cracking in kart chassis has been around for yrs and will never go away but in all my 20yrs in the sport now have i heard people asking for money back after using the karts when a chassis cracks. If ur kart has only done one or two meetings then for sure speak to john i know it is difficult i have been there but try squeezing ur personal and work life into mon and tues before going to next meeting on weds it is not easy! Especially when u have a family and 2 business to run i used to spend up to 30mins on the phone with some customers do the maths in an 8hr day to do work and answer calls is not easy. I used to get phonecalls on my mobile at 9 or 10 at nite from customers. And i wonder why my marrige didnt survive!
