I have been lucky touch wood never to lose a wheel but seen it plenty of times and as you seem newish i thought i would offer my findings.
I only ever use a 3/8" drive socket allen key with a bar. I use a fair amount of force doing it up but i like to be safe knowing its what is called f...ing tight. The downside to this is that i have before cracked a magnesium hub so do be carefull with that!! Also i only use self coloured allen bolts (Black colour) as the zinc plated ones i find are softer and start to round off a lot lot quicker than the black ones.
Just my opinion of course and we all have different ways of doing things!
If a little confused with what i use its basically a 3/8" socket set using the bar and a short extension with a bit adaptor on the end which can take any size allen key bit. (standard small socket set nothing fancy about Ł20)
