Thanks for the excellent advice, it looks like you are right in that its cut down as it shorter than the spare axle we have got.
Was only using standard allen keys, but have now invested in a TBar set and some for a socket ratchet. Part one of the learning curve.
Now off to raid my sons piggy bank to pay for them - as it's his kart...
