We also have had the "usual" Storm problems. Our son's chassis has also cracked on a weld and the chassis tubing. The main crack was shown to the person we paid for the kart and also another agent/dealer and both stated that the crack was in a "strange" place. Both agreed that it was beyond repair and if it was welded, that the "kart would never be the same again".Some of the welds appear to be of particularly poor quality. The kart was problematic before we even took it to the track. Some components were of such poor quality that they had to be changed before it could turn a wheel.2 of the bearings were cracked where the grub screws go in and the third was oval-shaped.First session out and the rear bumper fell off - checked the bolts etc before he went out and they seemed OK.Other bits fell off or broke but once replaced and sorted, the kart did run well for the first meeting and the first couple of sessions in the second but after that,it performed inconsistently.Fourth meeting out and the crack became apparent after spending the third meeting and half the fourth trying to sort out the handing problem.Once we found the crack,it was clear what was causing the handling problems.
It does seem that everyone we know of who has a Storm has had problems with cracking or component issues or both. Some are onto their second and we know of others who are onto their third Storm chassis. Most now have moved onto other manufacturer's karts. This has been heavily promoted as a budget kart making karting affordable. How can it possibly be considered a "budget" kart when it appears that they only last for a few meetings at most or you have to spend money replacing parts from new to make the karts trackworthy? We also have had a number of karts, all purchased second hand and have never had problems like this. This is our first purchase of a new kart and it has been a very big disappointment.
There is a bit on this site on the News section about Griffin racing running someone on a Storm and he appears to have done very well. There is no denying that the Storms can go well when new.Can we take it that this chap was running on a new or nearly new chassis ie one that is not cracked? The Storm kart appears to be getting pushed quite heavily by Griffin with the article giving the kart glowing praise. If it is this good, why did Griffin run what appeared to be Storm karts ie running with Storm bodywork and decals but the drivers were running with orange Intrepid chassis at the Gold Cup this year? My husband did ask one of the drivers what chassis he was running but as he was pulling on his helmet at the time,he didnt get a reply. The person standing beside the driver commented that they had been having "problems with the chassis" - dont know if he was a mechanic, friend or hanger on and did not find out exactly what the "problems" were.
It is unfortunate that this so called budget kart appears to be so problematic and is clearly not lasting and is being purchased perhaps by people who may struggle to replace them once, what appears to be,the inevitable problems arise.I cant remember the exact tag line of the Storm advert but I think it went along the lines of "now you can afford to go karting or you can afford to go karting now".....it was something like that.Yes,perhaps that's true that you can afford to go karting now but for how long before they fall apart?
Didn't mean to go on for so long but there do appear to be issues with these karts and it would be helpful if all Storm owners out there come on and let us all know how they have got on with the Storm.
Cheers
