Formula Ford is very different to kart racing, that's true and to be honest, they're not a very satisfying thing to drive. I did some FF1600 and FF2000 in the 1980s and I found the FF2000 a much better transition from karting.
These days, I would recommend that anyone taking their racing seriously and interested in making the move to car racing to look at BARC Formula Renault. Its not cheap, but then not a huge deal more expensive than British Formula Ford. If you're taking things less seriously, then a regional championship like Champion of Brands would be my recommendation.
In terms of Formula Vee... I have to admit to disliking these. They were [and still are] massively popular in Ireland and the default for a lot of people moving from karts there... but they really are terrible to drive and I did not find them a satisfying experience after having raced karts. Each to their own I guess.
