Problem is that the broken screw is in the carb top aluminium section - Screw R1, carb top R6. This screw holds down plastic cover R2.
The screw is chromed indeterminate quality steel and can break off if screwed down too tight in to the carb top R6, and always breaks off flush. I have done two now so have the following advice

1. Get a shorter screw
2. Never over tighten
3. Have a spare carb
4. Use a tillitson top (identical to tryton and lots of old carbs about for spares)
