Facemeister, in my experience, (which is based on max at MSA tracks only) there is an etiquette to karting that you did not fully meet, so forgive me being less positive than some others here but maybe what I say will make sense: -
Unless you are running in an engine, it is normal to be going pretty much as fast as you are able all of the time you are out on the track. Say within 5% of what your current skills and kart will allow. You very rarely see people on practice days just putting laps in many seconds slower than their limit then speeding up.
If you were tootling round, thats fine if youre just starting, you will get faster, but if you then get aggressive when challenged, to me thats a no-no. The driver behind sees your speed, plans a move and you suddenly change speed or position - Would you be happy to bend an axle or crack a nose cone if somebody did that to you?
Its very likely to get somebodys back up. So I recommend you concentrate on getting into driving the track - challenging yourself to push it to your own limit and sometimes beyond, and pretty soon people will be coming back towards you as you lap, then the next important element of karting - passing people - begins.
Cheers,
Jon
