I wouldn't say it's much more expensive than anything else - maybe tyres. It is however quite 'rough' compared to cadet so maybe much of the cost is down to bent axles etc.
The new 09 barrel is meant to be as good as the best old barrels. They do vary a little but nothing like old ones. It is CNC machined to give tighter tolerances than the previous cast method. I think this is why so many engines seem to be up for sale?
