My average costs also include a few problems (such as an awning destroyed in the wind and 2 seized engines requiring unexpected rebuilds).

One of the other novices I race with had to buy a new chassis after a big crash. Another one threw a conrod and pretty much had to scrap an engine.

I think it's important to include these costs; it's the nature of motorsport that the unexpected will happen, so it always costs more than you estimate at the start.

Maybe once you've been doing it a few years the unexpected costs go down, since you're experienced enough not to blow engines and have your awning take off. But probably you want to be more competitive, so spend money on performance instead.

Either way it's all great fun, but if you're poor I'd go race radio control cars instead, which is almost as much fun but a shed load cheaper!
