I started out in TKM myself a year ago. I started with DD, as the second-hand package came with DD engines.

Push-starting isn't that difficult, you can do it yourself if you fit an easy-start wheel.

At first I liked DD; I quickly got to within a couple of seconds of the guys at the front and was quite happy. The problem then was that I didn't have the confidence to try changing my lines and braking points to find the remaining time. If you try something with DD and it goes wrong, you're off and it's race over. With clutch you have the confidence to give things a try.

The downside of clutched is that the carb settings are more critical (if you get them wrong, it will just stall), and there are a few more bits to maintain and replace. However the TKM clutch is very good and if looked after won't need new parts very often.

My recommendation is definitely to buy a clutched engine. You can convert it to DD for about £10 (the cost of the conversion sprocket). Whereas if you buy DD, the cost of converting to clutched is a few hundred quid (which won't be worth it, so you'll end up buying another engine).
