It isn't always 'theft'.
I work in a pit where tools are often lent or 'borrowed' and it is surprising the number of tools that disappear over the day, and sometimes reappear one or several meetings later.
So it may just be that someone borrowed the guage to adjust his tyres at the last minute, dumped it on his trolley Or gave it to someone to hold and then at the end of the race either forgot where he'd got it or you had moved your trolley.
But it can really pay to engrave all your tools with your name, even spanners and T-bars (or maybe especially spanners and T-bars).
Though I have heard that in some cases thieves are arriving at meetings to find out who is there with their name and address proudly displayed and then visiting those local addresses with a fair chance that the family is out for the day.
