The FR125 is far from a great engine, but remember it filled the need, it did it before anyone else and it did it with the marketing oomph of a multinational behemoth. But most of all, it does the job well enough which means that the need for something better just isn't there.

They made the step change to karting and since then everyone, including the FIA/CIK and Tal-ko, have been following... and following at a significant distance. All the while Rotax have achieved a stranglehold on karting that would appear extremely difficult for a challenger to dislodge.
